India is a country of fairy tales and magic. The land of temples and gods, magnificent palaces, noisy rickshaws, colorful saris and impressive Himalayas. History of India begins with the birth of the Indus Valley civilization, which is known as the Harappan Civilization. It flourished in 2500 BC. In the Indus Valley has developed one of the largest of four ancient civilizations (Egypt, Mesopotamia, India and China). Ruins of buildings and archaeological things such as weapons, jewelry, toys are witness of a highly developed civilization, which had been existing about 5000 years ago.

The geographical position of India

India is the seventh largest country in the world and the second of the most populated. The country is located in South Asia, in peninsula Hindustan. In the North It has borders with Afghanistan, Bhutan, China and Nepal, in the East - with Bangladesh and Myanmar (Burma), In the West - with Pakistan. In the East It is washed with the Bay of Bengal, in the South – with the Indian Ocean, in the West - with the Arabian Sea. According to its nature the country can be divided into three parts: a mountain belt in the north, the Indo-Gangetic   plain and the Deccan Plateau.
Mountain belt includes the world's highest mountain range, the majestic and impressive Himalayas.  There are 96 peaks above 7300 m. in the Himalayas. The high peaks attract many climbers, and holy places -pilgrims from all over the world. To the holy Hindu places belong: - temples Jak and Manu, Hadimba Devi and Vaishno Devi and  Bageshvara,  Bidzhli and Mahadeva.  Also visit Dharamsala - the modern heart of the Buddhist tradition. These sacred places give strength, wisdom and will to live, Indo-Gangetic plain is one of the most ancient centers of the world civilization. Now it is developed agriculture place. People grow rice, wheat, millet, maize and cotton. There are also a lot of palm and fruit trees. Within the Indo-Gangetic plains are allocated two natural regions - an arid valley of the Indus and more wet Gangetic plain.

Flora and Fauna of India

The nature of India is very rich and diverse. You can find more than 2,000 species of birds, 500 - reptiles and amphibians and around 30000 kinds of insects, including bright butterflies.  India is world-famous for its tigers, Asian elephants and white lions, one horned rhinos, many species of deer and antelopes, bears, leopards and monkeys. Elephants live in less  populated areas  such as Kernataka, Kerala and Orissa, lions - in the rugged mountains and forests of Gir area of Gujarat, Tigers - in Sarderbans and Brahmaputra valley, cheetahs-in the Deccan plateau.
A wide variety of climatic conditions has contributed to the abundance of vegetation. Flora includes about 15 000 species of plants. According to the plant world India can be divided into the Western Himalayas, Eastern Himalayas, Assam, the Indus plain, the Ganga plain, the Deccan, Malabar.  Cedar, pine, spruce and fir are typical for the Western Himalayas. Oaks, maples, rhododendrons and birch trees grow in the eastern Himalayas. There are a lot of bamboos in Assam. Indus Plain area is poor in vegetation, and the Ganges Plaines is a plowed field. Dean is the zone of mixed forests. In the Malabar people grow industrial crops (coconut, pepper, coffee and tea) and there are a lot of mangrove forests in the Andaman region.

Climate of India

The climate of India is determined by three seasons: hot, wet (monsoon) and cool. The best time to visit the country is cool period from November to February. Although there are territorial variations, for example, Himalayas is better to visit in hot season.

Religion and culture of India

The main religion of India is Hinduism, which is confess by 80% of the population. The principal gods of Hinduism are Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. The basic principles of Hinduism are idea of karma, dharma and samsara. Hindus have their sacred books - the Vedas. Hinduism supports the caste system in Indian society.
Buddhism is also popular among people. They believe that Buddha was another incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.  There are only 6.6 million Buddhists In India, and the major Buddhist holy places, such as Bodhgaya, Sarnath (near Varanasi) and Kushinagar (near Gorakhpur) are located in northern part of India.
There are more than 100 million Muslims in India; they are mostly concentrated  in Jammu and Kashmir. Muslim influence is visible in architecture, art and cuisine. Sikhs (about 18million) live in Punjab. Their religion has principles both from Hinduism and Islam, but they deny caste distinctions and principles. The main sacred place foe Sikhs is the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
It should be noted that art and religion are closely connected with each other in India.
A large number of ethnic and linguistic groups have influenced the diversity and richness of folk music and dances. Music in India is a part of divine revelation. Folk dances reflect major life events and phenomena of nature: birth, marriage, the end of the harvest. Dancing with candles is a very famous tradition because fire is sacred and brings purification.
Indians love movies and Indian movie industry in Bombay is known around the world. Typical Indian movie is a melodrama, including romance, violence and music.

1) Agra (visit the majestic Taj Mahal that was built by the Emperor in memory of his wife, and is the eternal symbol of love), and then visit the Agra Fort, and the tomb of Akbar. Red Fort is mixture of power of a military fortress and luxury of royal palaces. It belongs to the UNESCO list as the best example of glass mosaics and paintings on marble.
2) Shimla is located in the North-West of  Himalayas and is popular among the tourists. There are many ancient buildings in the style of neo-Gothic in the city.
3) Yaku Shimla Hill is the area where you can enjoy communication with hundreds of playful monkeys; do not forget to bring something delicious to make your visit more exciting.

What to visit in India

- Humayun's Tomb. The first Mughal tomb-garden. It was built by Hamida Banu Begum in memory of her husband - Mughal Emperor Humayun
- Taj Mahal is the symbol of the country and a monument of eternal love which was built by the emperor in memory of his wife.
- Temples of Ellora - 34 Cloisters of three different religions - Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism - co-exist side by side in the caves of Ellora.
- Cave temples of Ajanta. Ajanta Caves are carved into the rock. Many of them are dedicated to Buddha. The oldest of the caves dates back to the II century. Ajanta Caves are very important holy places of Buddhism and are protected by UNESCO.
- Golden Temple in Amritsar is located in the middle of the sacred lake. Glittering in the sun, gold walls and domes, ornate marble staircases amaze everyone with its luxury and beauty.
- Bodh Gaya Mahabodhi is the most famous village in the world. Every year millions of pilgrims, tourists and monks come here., 2,500 years ago, under the bodhi tree Buddha attained enlightenment. At this place the house of the Great Awakening Mahabodhi was built.

What to do in India

1) Festivals:
Visit the colorful festivals that are held during the year. Festivals belong to the Indian culture. The festival program is different:  dances dedicated to Lord Ganesh, fireworks on Diwali, forming a human pyramid on Krishna Janmashtami, the parade of 50 000 camels in the small town of Pushkar, the temple festival with a parade of decorated elephants in Kerala.
2) Beaches:
The best beaches can be found on the west coast. Goa, Varkala and Gorkana are the world-class beaches.

Five senses garden has been designed for meditation and contemplation. In Mumbai there  is the Hanging Gardens, and in Calcutta - a botanical garden.
5) Riding a camel:
This is the best way to experience the wilderness, to enjoy its peace and quiet. Camel safari in the Thar Desert can be arranged from several hours to several days. Go to Rajasthan in Jaisalmer and Pushkar to experience this adventure. The best time to travel is from October to February.

India is also very interesting in historical point of view. It has many historical and religious monuments.  If you are interested in sea, sun and beaches - we recommend you the west coast of India. Goa is famous for its beaches.
