In spite of the fact that the majority of Russian population belong to the Orthodox Christian Church, pagan elements of ancient Slavs have been preserved in modern traditions and ceremonies. During many centuries the Russians have been continuing to celebrate pagan holidays (sometimes they even mix them with Christian), they believe in superstitious. Christianity has given such bright holidays as Easter and Christmas, and paganism - Pancake Day and Midsummer Day (Ivan Kupala`s Day). One of the most important Christian holidays is Easter, which is associated with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. On the day before the holiday people bake Russian Easter cakes (sweet bread) and paint eggs, which symbolize the body of Christ. It should be noted that in the pagan belief egg is a symbol of fertility. At Easter night people go to church to bless the food and in the morning visit relatives and friends to give them a cake or an egg with the words "Jesus is raised" on which they are supposed to answer, "In truth resurrected." This ceremony is called "Hristosovanie."

Kalyada (kalyadki) are held at Christmas night from 6 - 7 January. On streets you can see a group of people dressed in various costumes with masks of animals, sometimes even with goat, walking from house to house and performing the ritual songs (Christmas carols), owners of the house are supposed to reward them with sweets or money. Now this ritual can be seen only in villages, in towns just children sing carols, but it is not such a colorful show.

January, 19 is the Day of Baptism. About two thousand years ago on this day Jesus told John to baptize him in the river Jordan. In spite of the strong frosts, many people, even children, are trying to plunge into the water. The water on this day is considered to be healing and it is believed that those who plunge into the water on this day, will be healthy the whole year. In the evening traditionally girls tell fortunes on groom (this ritual has nothing to do with Christianity. (It is strictly prohibited to tell fortunes in Christian Church).

New Year is more popular than Christmas. It is celebrated everywhere. Russian people put and decorate a New Year tree, and at night from December 31 to January 1, they gather in group, drink champagne and other spirits, and make a wish.

It is not accepted to wear shorts, n mini-skirts and trousers (for women) to church or monastery. Men should remove their headdress, and women, wise versa, put a scarf on head. Kissing an icon with lip stick and loud conversations in churches belong to a sign of bad tone.
